The Little Bird is Calling
Today’s post is a classic and beautiful song produced by the Tzlil V’Zemer Boys Choir (Volume One).
The Little Bird is Calling is a parable that depicts the Jewish nation’s journey through exile and its ultimate redemption.

Why did you include a diminished chord?? (Waaaaaahhhhh😱)
I usually like to write up the chords as simply as possible so that the music will be accessible to most people.
In this case, however, the diminished chord was unavoidable.
If you listen to the Tzlil V’Zemer recording of this song, you will hear the unmistakable tension of the diminished chord between the last two lines of each verse section:
. . . Oh to see my nest again [diminished chord]
Oh to be redeemed . . .
Thus, I have included the diminished chord, and it will provide an opportunity for you to learn what a diminished chord is, if you are not already familiar with it.
How to play a diminished chord
- Start with the minor chord.
A diminished chord is really just a small adjustment to a minor chord.
If you need an Adim, start with an Am. - Flat the 5th of the minor chord. Now you have a diminished chord!

The little bird is calling,
It wishes to return.
The little bird is wounded,
It cannot fly but yearns.
It’s captured by the vultures,
Crying bitterly,
Oh, to see my nest again,
Oh, to be redeemed.

The little bird of silver,
So delicate and rare,
Still chirps amongst the vultures,
Outshining all that’s there.
How long, how long it suffers,
How long will it be,
When will come the eagle,
And set the little bird free.

The little bird is Yisroel,
The vultures are our foes,
The painful wound is Golus,
Which we all feel and know,
The nest is Yerushalayim,
Where we yearn to be once more,
The eagle is Moshiach,
Whom we are waiting for.
